What happens if your trial ends or a payment fails
Trial expiry closes your storefront immediately; a late subscription payment follows a 3-stage grace period before locking your dashboard, then your storefront.
On this page
Your school's own subscription to the platform (separate from what your students pay you) is billed from Settings → Billing & plan. Here's exactly what happens if it lapses.
Free trial (14 days)
If your 14-day trial ends without upgrading to a paid plan, your storefront goes offline to students immediately — there's no grace period. Your dashboard stays reachable so you can subscribe. You'll get a reminder email 3 days before the trial ends.
Your content is kept for 30 days. Subscribing any time within that window brings everything back exactly as you left it — no re-uploading required. After 30 days, your school's branding and custom domain are cleared.
Payment failures on a paid plan
If a payment fails on an active subscription, your school moves through three stages instead of shutting down right away. Schools billed through Stripe move to "Past due" the moment the charge actually fails. Taiwan schools billed through PayUni have no such failure event to react to — PayUni billing is manual renewal, so a daily check simply moves any school past its renewal date straight to "Past due", which then follows the same three stages below.
1. Past due — you'll see a warning banner in your dashboard asking you to update your payment method. Everything still works normally: your storefront, your dashboard, and your students' access.
2. Suspended (after 7 days past due) — your dashboard's course/page-building and editing screens are locked; only the Billing page stays reachable so you can fix your payment method. Your storefront stays open — students can still browse and buy during this stage.
3. Canceled (after 7 more days) — your storefront closes to students too, the same as an expired trial. Your data is kept for 90 days before your school's branding and custom domain are cleared.
Paying at any point in this process — even after your storefront has closed — brings everything back immediately.
The emails you'll get
- 3 days before your trial ends: a reminder to pick a plan.
- 7 days before a PayUni renewal date: a reminder to renew (PayUni doesn't charge automatically).
- When a payment needs confirming (e.g. your card asks for 3D Secure): a link to Stripe's confirmation page; if it isn't completed, the charge counts as failed.
- Payment failed or renewal date passed (past due), dashboard locked, storefront closed: one email for each stage.
- Subscription ended: when a subscription you canceled yourself runs out, the email says it ended as you requested, not for non-payment.
- Back to normal: when a payment makes your subscription active (your first payment, or recovering from past due / locked / closed), you'll get a "subscription active" email.
For schools billed through Stripe, Stripe keeps retrying the charge for about two weeks, including after you've reached the Suspended or Canceled stage. A successful retry brings everything back just like above; a failed retry doesn't move your school back to "Past due" or restart the 7-day clock. Stages only move forward, never back because of a failed retry.
What always keeps working
A few things stay available no matter which stage you're in, because locking them would create a worse problem than the one you're already dealing with:
- Billing — you can always update your payment method or change plans.
- Refunds — you can always refund a student, since that's an obligation to them, not something tied to your own subscription standing.
- Reducing usage — unpublishing courses, removing instructors or revoking invites, and deleting custom pages. While your dashboard is locked, these appear on the Billing & plan page under "Get under its limits first", next to each plan's limits. If you want a cheaper plan but have more courses or seats than it allows, bring them down there first, then switch.
- Your own account settings (name, password, notifications) — so you can always get back in, even if you need to reset your password.
